Finale !

Exploration thoughts!

Well at first I thought hmm...what is this 2.0 animal and can I actually tame it? Well I found it to be challenging
& pretty cool! There are tools such as Library Elf, Flickr and Image Generator that I am soooo glad I discovered. I don't know that I will use My Space or Google Base that often... but... you never know! Anyway, I'm glad that I didn't let the mystery of the unkown keep me from trying something new & possibly very useful. I hope that even I can help others enter the world of technology that will help make their life better! It was a bumpy ride but interesting & fun! Thanks for the opportunity :)

Google Base

Google base was not that great in my opinion. I searched for Interlibrary Loan and mostly the content was books/pamphlets that were for sale on Interlibrary loan procedures There were a few job openings listed if someone were interested but I did not find it that helpful. I did see however, where if you set up a database and post it that would be a more ideal use for Google Base. There were topics from recipes to employment to items for sale. This was probably the least useful to me.

Podcast/webinar to the rescue!

Webinars:
Online tutorials are based on pictures (or live), not words. They're the easiest way to learn computer subjects for me. Because I use Access database for inter-library loans, I found this to be so useful for me to refresh my memory when it is time to start a new year of records. I can see how useful it is to help patrons learn Access, Excel Word, Powerpoint and other applications. I find that I do better when I can see what is going on when it comes to learning. The link is: http://www.inpics.net/
Podcasts:
I found a podcast & participated in it on OCLC that I found useful. It was interactive & although there was a cost, there are some out there that are free! I can see where this can be useful for library applications as this one was to me.

Web 2.0

My mind is becoming more & more amazed at what is available. While checking out SEOmoz's Web2.0 I was entertained & educated at the same time. I really like how the site was so well organized. Little did I know that I had already checked out one of the top rated classified/directories:
Craig's List.www.craigslist.org It has almost e verything and anything you could want to buy, sell, find or read in one place. Look for dates, apartments, jobs and much more.
One Sentence.org . was another favorite of mine. Tell a true story in one sentence and read the one-sentence-stories of others'. Being an English major but not a great writer this seemed like a good assignment for students & a fun party game for adults! Or, just another way to express your feelings in one sentence!
http://www.onesentence.org/stories/popular/
Medstory www.medstory.com It is basically a search engine for health-related questions. I searched for degenerative disc disease & was easily able to find clinical trials, news media & research articles & info from the Web itself. I can see where it would be beneficial for health realted issues but I would still not just depend on it as there are other Medical databases that may more reliable on our databases.

You Tube

Well I do see what the hype is all about! There is absolutely everything on You Tube. I enjoyed the animal videos...especially the babies! Also I had watched a commercial I really thought was funny Terry Tate office linebacker from a commercial Reebok i believe. I was impressed with Denver Public Library & how they reached the Teens with the video contests. I also enjoyed the Library Idol from the school in Alabama (being a big fan of the show itself.) What a great way to make the library more fun for kids. Here is the link for Library Idol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QqQ3OTR3yQ. I can see countless possibilities the library could use you tube to show the community what we have going on !

Library Elf

My new best friend! What a great reminder! Somehow when I see the elf in action it is a more gentle reminder than a notice in the mail. I can see that it would be a great tool to encourage forgetful patrons/family members. It's a newsflash about books coming due or holds that are in or still on your list. Maybe I can get my books back on time!

Fantastk flickr!

It was so hard to choose just one photo! What an awesome tool! It would be very useful not only personally to keep up with & share photos, but to make any kind of flyer, display/ poster idea. I chose this picture because it seemed like a good ending to whatever kind of day you may have had. :)

Netlibrary

Netlibrary...why oh why have I waited so long? I set up an account....very easily and was pleasantly surprised to see the variety of fiction & non-fiction titles! Classics, new fiction & non-fiction. I have already chosen some titles to download. Haven't done that yet due to a needed upgrade to either MP3 player or computer but I have already chosen a favorites list. I was able to listen to previews of some titles. This will come in handy when our copies of some of the classics are out and a patron may need to read/listen by the next day! I don't want to encourage not reading, but listening to a book is important too. PS one title, Bare Bone by Kathy Reichs has the oh so familiar status of : checked out, missing, trace, transit & on hold......so with net library I can listen without waiting & no overdue fines!

Del.icio.us & tasty

I think this could actually be ok. At first I was confused about the usefulness and all this new technology is a little overwhelming. Anyway to see my tags go to: http://del.icio.us/bookus00
I found some of the same favorites as what was on our to do list which are good.

Space for MySpace

Well I guess never say never... Yes I now have a MySpace account. I am hoping to find it useful to get ideas from other librarians especially for Reference/Interlibrary loan ideas. I can see where we can promote library services to potential patrons. Especially Tutor.com to students. Hopefully this will be useful & I won't get a lot of junk. Time will tell. Keeping an open mind! Reach me @ http://www.myspace.com/bookloaner

Wiki

Wow! wiki-ing is way cool! It seems to be easier than blogging. I am going to probably use this more often as it seems to have more tools.

http://bookloaner.pbwiki.com/

My assignment:
Interlibrary loan procedure for a new staff member:

1) Patron must have a library card in good standing (fines less than $10.00)
2) Pink form is filled out with as much info about the item (more info = quicker we receive the item!) title, author isbn # is a plus!
3)Patron info name, phone # barcode # & library location

Instant Message

Well even though the Reference Department is asleep...it is kinda late. I sent them an instant message to say hello. this will open up a whole new Reference service. should be interesting. Here is my reply from Reference:
bookus00@gmail.com
(11:28:04 pm): Hi from Page aka bookus00 to reference department I am trying this instant message hope it works!

RSS feeds

Dictionary.com Word of the Day
I felt I had to sign up for this feed as one of our phone patrons calls daily for answers to crossword puzzles! I enjoy helping him because I learn a new word everyday but...he learns too! This will come in handy for reference questions!

South Carolina State Library
Because of my responsibilities at work and the fact that the State Library is "our library" I felt this was very important and necessary.

Double-Tongued Dictionary: All Entries and Citations
Another word feed but useful for slang words & their meanings.

The Weather Channel
This will be useful not only for myself personally but for patrons who may need weather info

The Weather Channel: Your Local Weather Outlook--Rock Hill, SC (29732)
Local Weather Outlook for Rock Hill, SC (29732). Since 1982, The Weather Channel has brought timely weather information to the world. Library Thing

Librarything
Librarything is THE thing!
Great for helping me remember what I have read but the bonus is I can use at work to make suggestions to patrons who have similiar tastes! Here's a list of my fav's: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/bookus00

Google Docs - my favorite online productivity tool

Yeah for Google Docs!

Google Docs is an excellent way to share documents- I did a book review & emailed it to Karen. It was so simple! I think it is awesome that it is possible to work on a document & not have to worry about hmmm did I save to a disk? Also to be able to share thoughts( which is a very good thing) before I forget, is a bonus! The link is: http://yclibrary.wordpress.com/

2.0 = A+

What a great idea ...an online productivity tool!

Librarians before Library2.0 !

Blogging???? who me? YES! So far so good....I am a rookie but I'm trying to learn new skills since I seem to be forgetting other things! I am hoping this will help me & the library...a win win situation. It's all good!
